What is Biomimetic Dentistry?
Biomimetic dentistry, a type of tooth conserving dentistry, treats weak, fractured, and decayed teeth in a way that seals them from bacterial invasion and keeps them strong. Biomimetic Dentistry has practically eliminated cutting teeth down for crowns and destructive root canal treatment in dental practices around the world. Patients are happier and often spend significantly less compared to customary treatment.
Biomimetic means to mimic nature/ Copy.
Nature is our ideal model to mirror. The basic science for dentally mimicking nature is found in the BioMechanical attributes of teeth. Our understanding of what nature looks like and feels like is vital. Teeth move, bend and have physical dynamics of force that must be taken into account while mimicking the tooth with nature as our guide. To paraphrase, we can study nature’s properties of teeth so that we can better duplicate them.
Undesirable results–even catastrophic failures can derive from competing synthetic dental materials, even though they might be stronger, stiffer and seemingly more beautiful. Dentistry has had structural failures and complications related to the over-engineering of materials, primarily since we did not have the knowledge or the technology to simulate natural teeth.
Biomimetic professionals have studied the dental scientific literature and have enforced those elements and techniques. Both patients and staff can attest to the restoration of teeth with biomimetic restorations. Catastrophic failure including root canals and fractures has been reduced or eliminated altogether when using biomimetics, not to mention they feel and look like real teeth.
Biomimetic dentistry is driven by modern adhesives and bonding techniques.
When using traditional dentistry we had to destroy healthy tooth structure to accommodate a new restoration, or "destroy in order to create." Now we are able to bond teeth back together and even add missing parts of the tooth without removing precious tooth structure, as well as sealing the tooth from invading bacterial infections. This has primarily eliminated the need for destructive, painful crowns and root canal treatments associated with pins, posts, slots, grooves and other non-adhesive retention features.
Biomimetic dentistry is very modern and conservative!
Removing large parts of tooth structure can be eliminated with modern science and ailments. Periodontal disease and caries (tooth decay) can be minimized or practically eliminated with modern therapies, proper home care, and good hygiene. These therapeutic remedies can significantly reduce periodontal problems and tooth infections without the invasive resection of tissue. Tooth decay and old fillings can be treated with the most conservative techniques and materials. Biomimetic dentistry is the mother-ship of tooth preservation and dental conservation. This new revolutionary form of dentistry can have a huge long lasting positive affect on people's lives! We can now help patients achieve a healthy and happy mouth with simple and painless techniques.
